When I first found out what the theme for this year’s National History Day was, I was a bit perplexed. The theme was so broad, and there were so many options I could choose from that could potentially categorize under this theme! I narrowed down my ideas to what directly involves our world around us today. I thought about what turning point in history has had the greatest impact in my everyday life today, and immediately it hit me: the Internet. I use it every day for various reasons ranging from education, social, research, and entertainment. The Internet is truly an integral part of not only my life but most of people's living in the 21st century; therefore I was eager to begin researching on it and present what I learned.
To start my research, I went directly to what I was researching - the Internet. I found innumerable amounts of interviews, images, summaries and more over the formation and creation of the Internet. I also checked my school library for books dedicated specifically to the effects of the Internet. Then, I interviewed people whose jobs had direct involvement with the Internet, such as my school Principal and teachers. With all of my different mediums of sources, I was able to delve deep into the entire history and impact the Internet had on the world, as well as how it is utilized today.
I wanted to try something challenging for my entry, yet one through which I could express my creativity and have fun with. I enjoy working with technology, therefore the option for creating a website was perfect. A website would give me the ability to incorporate video, image, and words into one project, unlike the rest of the project categories which were somewhat limited in this area. In honor of my topic, the Internet, I used the Internet to create my entry. I was able to customize my own site through weebly and really exploited all of the media possibilities of the Internet. I decided it would be best for me to work individually instead of with a group, as that way I would have full control over what elements I wanted to be apparent in my website.
This year's National History Day theme was Turning Points in History, into which the Internet fits perfectly as it truly revolutionized the interaction of people, ideas, and events throughout the world. The formation of the Internet caused the convergence of people with different cultures and ideas from every corner of the globe. It provided instant access to information and gave people a platform to spread their ideas through, no matter their location. The Internet has given people an opportunity to voice their opinions, which could become catalysts for major events to take place and change the world. The Internet has connected a big world and made it accessible to anyone – in a cyber world.
